Kerry Save Our Woods Network Celebratory Walk in the Woods

Glanteenassig Woods,

near Castlegregory, Co. Kerry

Sunday 14th July @2pm

In response to campaigns both in Kerry and nationwide the government was forced to back down and take the proposed sale of our publicly owned forests off the table.

As well as Kerry Save Our Woods Network organisations working on the campaign included The Natural Resources Protection Alliance, The Woodland League, Keep Ireland Open, Shell to Sea, Anti-Fracking groups, Mountaineering Ireland, walking clubs and many other groups. This resulted in a massive turn out at the protest walk in Avondale, Co. Wicklow on 28th April. This was followed by a National day of walks on June 9th where huge numbers turned out to oppose the sale.

Coillte lands will now stay in public ownership. It is a tremendous victory for the campaign and for people power, that exactly one year since the government committed to the sale of Coillte harvesting rights, they were forced to do a complete U-turn and shelve the plan.

While this is a victory, it does not mean that the government will not at some later stage try privatisation by stealth. The details of the re-structuring of Coillte must be examined and Kerry Save Our Woods Network will be ready to mobilise again should the need arise.

In the meantime people are encouraged to join the celebratory walk and enjoy an afternoon in the woods!! Walk will include music, talks and more….
